A Story Based On The Tater/Perry Detective Story...

Title: “Track Down Trouble: Tater & Perry's Train Mystery”

It was a sunny morning in Los Angeles, but Tater Ramirez-Humphrey wasn’t interested in beaches or bikes today—she had her detective hat on. Literally. It was a purple fedora with a fake feather sticking out. She adjusted it dramatically in the mirror, grabbed her notebook, and headed out.

“Detective Tater on the case,” she whispered to herself.

Meanwhile, from a nearby alley, a quiet chittering sound could be heard. It was Agent P—better known to the world as Perry the Platypus—wearing his signature fedora and sipping a smoothie like it was nobody’s business. He’d been assigned to partner with Tater on a special mission by O.W.C.A. (The Organization Without a Cool Acronym).

Their mission? Investigate a mysterious string of thefts on the Pacific Express, a luxury train that ran up and down the California coast. Jewelry. Gadgets. Even someone’s prize-winning mango had gone missing.

Union Station, 10:15 AM

Tater met Perry at Track 9, where the Pacific Express was just boarding. She grinned.

“You must be my partner,” she said, crouching down to shake his little paw. “Don’t worry, Perry. Stick with me and we’ll crack this case like a breakfast burrito.”

Perry blinked, nodded seriously, and tipped his hat.

They boarded the train, blending in with the passengers. Tater immediately went into detective mode, scribbling notes in her journal as she observed suspicious characters:

  • A man with a mustache too fancy for 10 a.m.

  • A woman whose suitcase was making a suspicious ticking sound.

  • A little old lady who kept looking around like she’d done something wrong.

Then, just as the train pulled out of the station—BAM!—the lights flickered, and someone screamed.

“My diamond-encrusted lava lamp! It’s GONE!”

It was the influencer in Car B. She had 4.7 million followers and was absolutely losing it.

Car B, 10:45 AM

Tater and Perry arrived at the scene. Tater inspected the display case—no signs of forced entry. Perry silently sniffed around, then pulled out a small magnifying glass from under his hat.

“Hmm…” Tater murmured. “No fingerprints. And the glass wasn’t broken. That means someone had access.”

Perry pointed with his tail toward the ceiling vent. There was a smudge of green glitter. Tater’s eyes widened.

“Who wears green glitter?!” she whispered. Then she gasped. “Glenda Sparklejuice—the magician who performed last night in the dining car!”

Dining Car, 11:05 AM

They found Glenda sipping tea and petting her pet ferret, Lord Biscuit. She looked up with a smirk.

“I see the game is afoot,” she said dramatically.

Tater leaned in. “Tell us what you did with the lava lamp, Glenda.”

Glenda raised a brow. “I was in the lounge practicing my disappearing rabbit trick. Ask anyone. Or better yet… ask Lord Biscuit.”

Perry squinted. The ferret was wearing… a very tiny glove. Suspicious. While Tater distracted Glenda with magician talk, Perry climbed a bookshelf and yanked open the overhead luggage compartment. Out rolled a suitcase—with the lava lamp inside.

Car B, 11:25 AM

“Caught red-handed!” Tater shouted, holding up the glittery glove Perry found in the suitcase.

Glenda Sparklejuice sighed. “Fine. I needed it for my next trick. I was going to return it! Eventually…”

Tater put her hands on her hips. “The only trick you’ll be doing is a disappearing act… into a holding cell.”

Perry made a satisfied chitter and gave a little salute.

Pacific Express, Sunset

With the mystery solved, Tater and Perry sat in the observation car eating churros and sipping fruit punch.

“You know,” Tater said, “we make a pretty good team. Me with my smarts, and you with your… ninja platypus moves.”

Perry just blinked and looked out the window, cool as ever.

Then Tater sat up straight. “Wait… where’s my churro?!”

Perry slowly turned his head toward the sleeping old lady from earlier—who had suspicious cinnamon sugar on her fingers.

Tater grinned. “Guess we’re not off duty yet.”
